The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO or the Council) is a nonpartisan, nationwide, nonprofit organization of public officials who head departments of elementary and secondary education in the states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, Bureau of Indian Education and five U.S. extra-state jurisdictions. CCSSO provides leadership, advocacy, and technical assistance on major educational issues. CCSSO seeks member consensus on major educational issues and expresses their views to civic and professional organizations, federal agencies, Congress, and the public.
CCSSO seeks an enthusiastic, organized, and collaborative candidate eager to learn about education policy at a mission-driven organization focused on improving educational outcome for kids. The Membership Associate will report directly to the Senior Program Director for State Leadership. The Membership Associate will be responsible for providing support on a variety of initiatives, including organizing meetings and resources for CCSSO’s Board of Directors, as well as providing project management support to high profile annual convenings with chief state school officers and their senior staff. The Membership Associate will also provide support on the development of an annual survey and annual report. The Membership Associate will work closely with colleagues across the Council.
Successful Membership Meetings
Collaborate closely with a Senior Meeting Planner from CCSSO’s Meetings Team and facilitate a planning team to plan for and execute logistics for three annual member meetings. The Membership Associate will work with the Senior Program Director to set a project timeline, set agendas for regular planning meetings and track completion of follow-up items.
Provide feedback on the content and structure of sessions to the Senior Program Director and other colleagues on each event’s planning team.
Responsive Membership Supports
Collaborate with programmatic colleagues to provide rapid response to questions from state members on a variety of issues.
Be nimble and creative in working with colleagues to problem solve solutions to member issues that arise in a fast-paced environment.
Provide support on the development and publication of an annual report customized to each state to be shared with state members each spring.
Provide project management support on the development of an annual membership survey to be sent to chiefs and deputies each summer.
Maintain productive relationships with state members and their staff, and coordinate with CCSSO’s Executive Office on maintaining excellent data on membership.
Develop briefing materials to support senior leaders of CCSSO in connecting with new members.
Supported Board of Directors
Ensure draft agendas are prepared in advance of monthly meetings of CCSSO’s Board of Directors, and that appropriate materials are put together and sent to Board Members in advance of each meeting.
Prepare detailed notes and minutes following Board meetings.
This positon will require travel approximately 10-20% of the time. Candidate must live in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor’s degree required plus a minimum of two (2) years’ experience. Master’s Degree preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to handle multiple tasks and requests simultaneously and project management experience.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and the ability to respond to common inquiries from internal and external customers.
Keen awareness of emotional intelligence in self and others.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
To perform this job successfully, an individual should be able to use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint and have created or used charts, spreadsheets, and databases. Successful incumbents are proficient at using Zoom, Outlook and Intranet/Internet tools.
