Position Overview: The New Jersey State Bar Association together with the New Jersey State Bar Foundation is seeking a proactive, hands-on Controller for its office at the Law Center in New Brunswick. The position will report directly to the Executive Director, and successful candidates should be experienced in all aspects of financial management, including non-profit finance for 501(c)6 and 501(c)3 organizations, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and adherence/development of internal control policies and procedures.
Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Supervise all accounting operations for $12M and $3M operating budgets for the Association and Foundation respectively.
Provide cash and treasury management including overseeing reconciliation of banking activity (11 accounts), revenue recognition, credit card processing, sales tax returns and investment accounts.
Deliver audit preparation to outside auditors and resolve other formal financial inquiries from agencies, insurance companies and banking institutions.
Work with senior staff to create and maintain accurate forecasting models, including tools and procedures to identify efficiencies, cost savings, and/or unanticipated expenses in real time as they occur.
Continually evaluate best industry practices in comparison to internal systems.
Overall financial management responsibility including production and review of monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements.
Work closely with Senior Directors and their staffs to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures.
Supervise accounting staff, including training and cross-training employees.
Protect assets and the overall accuracy and reliability of financial reporting by establishing, monitoring and enforcing appropriate controls, policies and procedures.
Maintain complex chart of accounts for transaction accuracy.
Work with IT and Customer Service Department to ensure accuracy of the Association’s CRM Database (Personify).
Manage 401k/Profit Sharing Plan and file 5500 to Social Security Administration.
File 990 for both entities along with any supplemental filings and payments.
Prepare complex journal entries allocating expense between entities and recording investment transactions.
Prepare annual budget with input from Senior Directors.
Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

Experience requirements include, but are not limited to:
Hands-on, daily experience with nonprofit/association accounting software (Microsoft Dynamics a plus, but not required)
Hands-on, daily experience with nonprofit/association management software (Personify, iMIS, etc.)
10 plus years in high functioning accounting position
Proven supervisory skills
