SmithBucklin, a 100 percent employee-owned association management company, is hiring an Executive Director to serve its client organization, the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT), based in our Chicago office. ASBMT is a quarter century old interdisciplinary society dedicated to improving the application and success of blood and marrow transplantation and related cellular therapies. Among other things, ASBMT fosters scientific research and exchange of knowledge, advances medical practice through standards and guidelines, advocates for positive legislative and regulatory decisions, and educates and connects stakeholders across the globe.
ASBMT’s growing membership, currently ~2,200, represents 45 different countries, but is heavily concentrated in the United States. ASBMT is experiencing high membership, and programming growth, and its volunteer leaders have articulated a preferred future through a comprehensive strategic plan document. ASBMT enjoys several critically important collaborative relationships with other societies and affiliated organizations. For example, in 1996, with the International Society for Cellular Therapy, ASBMT co-founded the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy, an accreditation program for BMT centers.
In this role you will be responsible for working closely with ASBMT Board of Directors and their Executive Committee to implement and manage all policies, programs, services and practices for the Association. You'll contribute to strategic discussions with leadership and be accountable for putting strategic thinking into action and achievement of outcomes. You’ll be accountable for managing the finances of the organization, currently at ~$3.75M annual operating revenue. You’ll lead your staff team and ensure service excellence is delivered to all ASBMT members, volunteers, and stakeholders.
Success measures include earned confidence and trust of ASBMT’s board and leadership, engagement of ASBMT volunteers beyond the board, and overall volunteer satisfaction with staff performance and the SmithBucklin partnership, financial health and well-being, compliance to all laws, regulations, bylaws, policies, etc., a high-performing and engaged staff team, growth and positive mission impact of ASBMT for all stakeholders. Success is also measured by is the ability to develop colleagues, create organizational capacity within SmithBucklin, and fulfill the operational expectations of a SmithBucklin association executive.
What You Will Do
Demonstrate executive leadership and outstanding society/association management expertise through communications, thought leadership, and action-taking
Advise, when appropriate, ASBMT on legal issues, strategic considerations, operational improvements, and other matters that advance the mission of ASBMT
Collaborate with leadership to develop long-term strategic plans that support the Associations mission and goals.
Lead staff and other resources to put strategic thinking into action, communicating regularly, and achieving desired outcomes; achieve a high-performing, collegial, engaged staff team
Oversee all operational activities of the society, through effective communication, administration, and implementation of best practices
Oversee all financial matters of the society, including budget development, AP/AR, reporting, etc.
Seek to learn, synthesize, and retain information and knowledge related to the B&T field
Develop performance objectives for staff, and implement People Manager Effectiveness techniques and practices, including key staff located in remote locations
Continuously test for satisfaction of ASBMT stakeholders and take action to continually improve in quality, efficiency, and innovation
Fulfill duties as requested by the Board, such as nurturing and developing collaborations/partnerships, advise on governance effectiveness, develop business plans, etc.
Serve as the primary representative of all SmithBucklin; communicate principles, philosophies, and practices of SmithBucklin; live, through communications and actions, the SmithBucklin chosen values
Leverage all SmithBucklin resources, and fulfill duties and expectations of a SmithBucklin Executive Director

Minimum 5-7 years related executive management experience with demonstrated organizational, operational and leadership experience within the non-for-profit sector, preferably with a similar professional association
Experience as an Executive Director, CEO, COO or the top P&L leader of a comparably sized organization
An analytical mind capable for “out-of-the-box” thinking to solve problems
Knowledge and experience within the healthcare field is preferable
Demonstrated passion for the mission of his/her organization, his/her professional community and cultivating a continuous learning culture
Relationship building skills to cultivate and maintain engagement with member organizations and volunteers
History of leading a staff of full-time employees and managing their professional development
Effective presentation and public speaking skills are required
A strong executive presence and engaging personality that encourages consensus building and cooperation among staff and community
An undergraduate degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred
CAE (Certified Association Executive) is preferred
High level of strategic and financial management experience
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
