SmithBucklin, a 100 percent employee-owned association management company, is hiring an Executive Director to serve its client organization, Neurocritical Care Society (NCS). Founded in 2002, NCS’s vision is to provide and advocate for the highest quality of care for patients with critical neurological illness throughout the world. NCS is a progressive, growth-oriented organization of more than 2,500 multi-professional members including physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, and pharmacists that provides a wide variety of educational opportunities including the Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) program and Annual Meeting, a vibrant volunteer program, and research opportunities.
NCS is seeking an accomplished association executive with demonstrated success in driving business growth, managing client and sponsor relationships, and overseeing operations. The executive director will be responsible for the overall strategic, operational, and financial well-being of the organization. He/she will work closely with the NCS Board of Directors to implement and manage all policies, programs, services and practices for the association.
Success measures include earned confidence and trust of the NCS board and leadership, engagement of NCS volunteers beyond the board, and overall volunteer satisfaction with staff performance and the SmithBucklin partnership, financial health and well-being, compliance to all laws, regulations, bylaws, policies, etc., a high-performing and engaged staff team, growth and positive mission impact of NCS for all stakeholders. Success is also measured by is the ability to develop colleagues, create organizational capacity within SmithBucklin, and fulfill the operational expectations of a SmithBucklin association executive.
What You Will Do
Demonstrate executive leadership and outstanding association management expertise through communications, thought leadership, and action-taking
Advise, when appropriate, NCS on strategic considerations, operational improvements, legal issues, and other matters that advance the mission of NCS
Collaborate with leadership to develop long-term strategic plans that support the society’s mission and goals
Help maintain focus on key priorities, and deftly consider and communicate through opportunities or situations that arise
Lead staff and other resources to put strategic thinking into action, communicating regularly, and achieving desired outcomes; achieve a high-performing, collegial, engaged staff team
Oversee all operational activities of the society, through effective communication, administration, and implementation of best practices
Oversee all financial matters of the society, including budget development, AP/AR, reporting, etc.
Seek to learn, synthesize, and retain information and knowledge related to the neurocritical care field
Develop performance objectives for staff, and implement People Manager Effectiveness techniques and practices, including key staff located in remote locations
Continuously test for satisfaction of NCS stakeholders and take action to continually improve in quality, efficiency, and innovation
Fulfill duties as requested by the Board, such as nurturing and developing collaborations/partnerships, advise on governance effectiveness, develop business plans, etc.
Serve as the primary representative of all SmithBucklin; communicate principles, philosophies, and practices of SmithBucklin; live, through communications and actions, the SmithBucklin chosen values
Leverage all SmithBucklin resources, and fulfill duties and expectations of a SmithBucklin Executive Director

Someone with vision and purpose that has a history of painting a compelling picture of the vision and strategy of an organization and motivating others to action
Minimum 5-7 years related executive management experience with demonstrated organizational, operational and leadership experience within the non-for-profit sector, preferably with a similar professional association
Experience as an Executive Director, CEO, COO or the top P&L leader of a comparably sized organization,
Medical or healthcare experience preferred
An analytical mind capable for “out-of-the-box” thinking to solve problems
Knowledge and experience within the healthcare field is preferable
Demonstrated passion for the mission of his/her organization, his/her professional community and cultivating a continuous learning culture
Relationship building skills to cultivate and maintain engagement with member organizations and volunteers
History of leading a staff of full-time employees and managing their professional development
Effective presentation and public speaking skills are required
A strong executive presence and engaging personality that encourages consensus building and cooperation among staff and community
An undergraduate degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred
CAE (Certified Association Executive) is preferred
High level of strategic and financial management experience
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
