The Associate Editor assists with editorial and production requirements of Military Officer magazine and other MOAA publications. Duties include substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading, research/fact-checking, and writing original articles. The ideal candidate will have prior experience editing and writing for magazines or newspapers (including student publications). Position is onsite in Alexandria, VA.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Serves as lead editorial team member for assigned feature articles, magazine departments, and non-periodical association publications; edits assigned features, departments, and publications for length, accuracy, style, grammar, and clarity.
Proofreads and copy edits the print magazine and digital publications (website and email newsletters) as well as other cross-departmental print and digital publications and collateral.
Assists other editors in processing manuscripts and graphic materials for Military Officer and other print and digital publications and multimedia products of the association.
Researches and writes occasional feature articles, news stories, and other copy for association materials, to include public relations materials.
Optimizes assigned content for digital publication.
Reviews manuscripts submitted for publication.
Corresponds with contributors and processes queries and manuscripts submitted for publication.
Assists with distribution/dissemination of association statements and press releases.
Responds to member queries regarding editorial content.
Tracks and prepares submissions for industry awards.
Required Professional Qualifications:
This is an entry-level position.
Strong journalistic skills acquired through minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work exp erience in journalism, English, or related field.
Comprehensive knowledge of professional writing, rewriting, grammar, copyediting, and substantive editing techniques and working knowledge of Associated Press style.
Excellent computer skills for word processing and desktop publishing using Macintosh systems and Microsoft Office and Adobe InDesign software.
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to exercise independent judgment while working under the pressure of deadlines.
Qualifying candidates will be given a copyediting/proofreading test.
Desirable Professional Qualifications and Experience:
A superb eye for detail.
Experience in or with military service a plus.
